A water ATM, is a water vending equipment just like bank ATM, except for the fact that here money goes into the device and water comes out.
These devices run on cash and also smart card system or prepaid card is built, owned and operated by private companies’ organizations that have rights over public resources like water and land. It is also not evident how much ground water an organization can draw in a day.
Although it was only in 2015 that the Government decided to look for Water Vending Machine for Sale across different unauthorized colonies, these devices have been used for over 10 years in other states. The water department commenced its pilot water ATM project in 15 locations in early 2013. Almost 850 of the 7500 families there used the amenity.
Right from the 1990s, the Government has propelled various private sector projects in the water sector with the hope that giving the responsibility of water to private organizations can bring more accountability and transparency to the procedure but that is yet to happen. International financial companies such as the Japan International Cooperation Agency, Asian Development Bank and World Bank have also supported the US Government by offering extra funding for different projects. Many of these private-public partnership (PPP) projects have failed and just added to the financial burden of the government.
Water ATMs have raised concerns over the basic rights and entitlements of those living in slums and also rural areas.
